the Simple T
Knit-along
Ready for your first garment? We are super excited to host a new knit-along for a beginner level sweater – The Simple T.
This pattern uses only the main bed of the machine (standard gauge) and incorporates many techniques from our Beginner Class.
Join us and learn how to knit this relaxed, modern silhouette. Available in two sizes.
Date: June 21st - July 19th, 2025
Cost: $65 / $55 for members of Unlimited
Machine: Standard gauge
Although this is a beginner project, basic understanding and practice of machine knitting is required.
The Simple T incorporates techniques taught in the Beginner Class - tension swatches, turned hem and reformed rib. There will be some simple shaping and short rows, and the garment can be assembled using a linker, rehung on the machine or hand sewn.
The silhouette is relaxed and modern and comes in two sizes - small/medium and large/extra large.
We used an industrially spun cashmere that required wet-finishing, but as long as you can meet the gauge swatch with your chosen fingering weight yarn, you are good to go. Gauge and yarn information will be provided upon registration, so you can shop for yarns before the knit-along begins.
Detailed videos and a supporting written instructions will provide help along the way to ensure a good outcome.
Week 1
Practice the techniques
The project features reformed stitches at the side split, and a combined shoulder and neck shaping. We will practice these techniques individually with small swatches before diving into making the whole garment.
30 mins Kick Off zoom Meeting:
June 21, 10am PST
Week 2
Sleeves & Front Panels
All the pieces of this garment begin with a turned hem. This technique is covered in our Beginner class, but we recommend students practice it on a small swatch if you’ve never tried this technique before.
We will focus on the sleeves, and front panels this week.
Because of the relaxed silhouette, the left and right sides of the front panel are knit separately, and joined together in Week 4.
Week 3
Back Panels & Shoulder shaping
After knitting the first back panel (and while the piece still hangs on the machine), we will rehang and complete the corresponding front shoulder and neck, and do a combined bind off to connect the two pieces.
The steps involved are simple, but require patience and focus. The accompanying videos will guide you through the challenging parts.
Week 4
Assembly
We will finish the garment by connecting the sleeves and body panels together, either by hand-sewing, rehanging on the machine or linking.
The sleevehead, and center front and back are assembled with exposed seams, while underarm and side seams are assembled in the regular manner.
We will cover how to wet-finish (if needed for your chosen yarn), and properly steam the pieces before assembly.
