Advanced Cables
Knit-along for
Step up your cable game!
This deep dive will take you on a cable journey, starting with the basic cables shown in our Advanced Ribber Class. Each video will advance your skills - wider cables, traveling cables, cables that use both the ribber and main bed - ending with a challenge to create your own cable. Along the way we will also look at cables with tucking and plating.
Class Duration:
March 28th - April 21st, 2026
Kickoff Zoom Meeting:
March 28th, 10-10:30am PST
Cost:
$30 / $25 for members of Unlimited
How will We learn
We will be focusing on different techniques each week. There will be assignments to test your new skills, and you will have plenty of time to practice.
A digital copy of the workbook, that contains assignments and additional resources, will be available for download when we begin Week 1. All techniques are demonstrated in video format that you can watch as many times as needed during the KAL. You will also have access to a closed forum to post your questions. The workbook is yours to keep.
Week-by-week schedule
We have broken the class down into four weekly sections, but you are free to move through the course faster if you have the time.
-
We will start with the basic 2-over-2 cable, and explore how to create variations by adjusting direction, frequency, and needle transfers. Then we will move on to bigger cables, like the 3x3, and making a cable appear wider by cabling progressively across the fabric.
-
Cabling between the main bed and ribber bed is a little more challenging, but it gives the cable an interesting appearance like it is traveling across the background. We will show you several examples of how this is done, and look at a cable design where stitches seem to appear and disappear.
-
Cables are typically symmetrical, but not always. Adding to techniques learned in week 2, we will try a cable that is assymetrical requiring absolute concentration! Helen will then talk about her process in designing cables and offer a challenge to sketch and swatch a new cable.
-
Both tuck stitches and plating can add interest to a cable design and we will look at these two techniques now. We will also talk a little bit about calculating tension for cable projects.
