Expand your repertoire with fun techniques for creating textural knitted fabrics using loops and fringing

In this 4-week knit-along, you will learn how to uses the machine in some non-traditional ways to add fringing with specifically designed punch-cards and hand-manipulation. Big loops are made using the ribber (or a piece of card) as a tool for wrapping. Using the pile technique, we show you how to make small loops. Techniques differ between Silver Reed and Brother. Both are shown.

How will We learn

We will be focusing on different techniques each week. There will be assignments to test your new skills, and you will have plenty of time to practice.

A digital copy of the workbook, that contains assignments and additional resources, will be available for download when we begins Week 1. All techniques are demonstrated in video format that you can watch as many times as needed during the KAL. You will also have access to a closed forum to post your questions. The workbook is yours to keep.

Week-by-week schedule

We have broken the class down into four weekly sections, but you are free to move through the course faster if you have the time.

  • We will play with fairisle and cut floats. The idea is to create long floats between the pattern repeats, and cut the floats to form the fringe.

  • We will explore 2 techniques that can be used with novelty yarns in different texture and thickness to create fun and dramatic effect.

  • We will show you a technique that knitting a separate piece of fringing on the machine, then attaching it to the edge of the fabric or within the body of the fabric.

  • To wrap up, we are going to demonstrate two techniques – Weaving & Cut Floats on the Brother machine, and Pile Knitting on both Brother, and Silver Reed machines.

  • Registration closes on January 23rd 11:59 PST

  • We will be hosting a 30 minute zoom meeting on Saturday January 24th, 10am PST to meet and greet everyone.

  • A digital copy of the workbook, with additional resources and assignments, is included.

  • Participants will be granted access to class material and closed forum starting January 24th, 2026.

  • You will receive a weekly email reminder in the duration of the class, with link to lesson of the week, and assignments to complete.

  • Access to class videos and forum will remain available until 1 week after week 4. That gives our participants extra time to finish up the assignments, or revisit any subjects covered in this class.
