Beginner Machine Knitting

knit-along for

What will you learn

You will get familiar with different parts of the machine, learn how to correctly thread the tension unit, and ways to cast on and bind off. We will also discuss machine gauges, yarn specifically for machine knitting, and how to make a perfect tension swatch.

Week-by-week schedule

  • You will learn about stitch lengths, and how tension affects the fabric. Next we will look at several cast-on methods and compare their behavior and appearance, so you can pick a preferred method.

  • We will show you 4 more ways to start a piece of knitting using the main bed, each with different characteristics. These are great if you want to add a more stable start to your fabric without the ribber attachment.

  • We are going to look at two ways to bind off - the transfer tool bind-off and the latch tool bind-off. We will also learn how to make and measure a tension swatch, and how to properly steam and wet-finish knitted fabric. Before a final project, we will show you how to change color and make stripes.

  • To wrap up this KAL, we offer two project patterns to implement your new skills - The Big Scarf, and Neck Warmer. We will have a zoom meeting at the end of week 4 to celebrate and talk about machine knitting. A Zoom link will be emailed to you at the beginning of week 4.
