knit-along for
Advanced Ribber
Ready for more Ribber Bed techniques? We’ll explore Cables, Plating, Racking, Drop Stitch and Double Bed Jacquard.
Building on your existing ribber knowledge, this class takes you deeper using transfers, punch-cards/computer, the racking handle and (deliberately) dropped stitches to create a variety of textured and patterned fabrics.
Class Duration:
June 27th – July 25th, 2026
Kickoff Zoom Meeting:
June 27th, 10-10:30am PST (California Time)
Cost:
$30 / $25 for members of Unlimited
Registration Opens on May 30th, 2026
What will you learn
We will explore basic cables including how to thoughtfully transition from a rib trim to a cable rib layout. Next is a deep dive into double bed jacquard - what it is, how to knit it, and how to alter the reverse side of the fabric. We include some illustrations showing the path of the yarn for the knitting nerds (like us!).
Before the class project, we’ll demonstrate plating, then how to use the racking handle to create textures and finally how to use the needles on the ribber bed to create enlarged loops by knitting them and then deliberately dropping them.
Week-by-week schedule
-
We will explore cables and teach you how to create various 2-over-2 cable patterns by adjusting direction, frequency, and needle transfers. You'll also learn how to plan transfers when transitioning from regular rib to cable setup.
-
We'll dive into double bed jacquard techniques that use rib structure to eliminate floats created by Fair Isle patterns knitted on the main bed. If you've ever wondered how 3- and 4-color DBJ is knitted, you'll get your answer in this class.
-
The ribber can create not only ribs but also a variety of effects through plating, racking, and drop stitch techniques. We will demonstrate several examples and provide instructions for you to try on your machine.
-
We have prepared a couple of projects: one that uses the plating technique and various needle layouts to make a Baby Blanket. And another challenge to test your understanding of some of the subjects presented in this class. Answers will be provided.
